An Orgy of Glory: really, a glorgy

Tuesday, December 30th, 2008

If you read this blog but not Super Fanicom, you’re a bit odd, because I post over there too, and besides, everyone else there is awesome too.  But for you tragic few, here’s some awesome news:  the Super Fanicom crew, which includes me, has started a podcast!  Yes, I know, you reel in orgiastic glee.  The first podcast can be found here, wherein we talk about Toradora! thirteen.  OGT joins Pontifus and me — lelangir and Kaiserpingvin were MIA this time, but just you wait — and, glory amid glory! — if you’re watching Toradora! you can sync the podcast with episode thirteen.  It’s a commentary track.  If you don’t want to do that, listen anyway, we’re pretty funny.  You probably won’t look at birds the same way again.

Christmas in the Stars… I mean, just Christmas.

Because even I like the cheese.

Because even I like the cheese.

Last week I was sitting around in the living room while my mom watched a terrible Lifetime Network Christmas special, as she is wont to do.  It was, as usual, about “saving Christmas.”  The particular permutation had to do with a rural area and this huge Christmas village thing run by a guy — played by Tom Arnold — who owes money and will lose his giant Christmas village thing if he doesn’t pony up.  I figured out (I didn’t sit through the whole thing) that the daugher had renounced her rural roots and was dating the douche responsible for the buyout, but she eventually repents and makes out with the earnest young nutcracker-making guy who’s never left the town and has pined for her for ever and ever.  This is typical stuff, both for Christmas and for Lifetime dramas.  I’m telling you all this because it got me to thinking about the differences between Christmas in Japan and America.  Not that this topic is necessarily new, but I thought I’d talk about it a bit.

I was talking to CCY earlier today (I guess yesterday, technically), and we both mentioned that we meant to do a post about our favorite openings and endings of the year — it’s the end of the year, that sort of stuff happens.  He’s already finished, and really he’s done a better job than I will?  Why?  Well, just to give you one reason, I’m not sure which themes are actually 2008 and which I simply heard in 2008.   We will do our best, however.

doko kara… suck?

This is a strange little post, I admit.  It’s just that I haven’t watched any Bleach since the summer, and I’ve been considering starting it back up again.  Not that this, on its own, is particularly strange; I typically fall off watching a show for months at a time.  I mean, until last week, nearly as much time had gone by between episodes of Tengen Toppa Gurren Lagann, which I think is a much better show than Bleach.  I just get busy, or get sick of the show and need time away from it, whatever.  But it did get me to thinking.  So far as I can tell (or at least, so far as lelangir has told me), the Bount arc — which is what I’m officially in the middle of watching  – is universally reviled.  It’s not doing much for me, either.  I was just wondering:  given that I’ve pretty much enjoyed everything Bleach has thrown at me up to this point, why did the Bount arc fall over so badly?

Kannagi 9, twittered

Wednesday, December 24th, 2008

If you’ve missed it, I’ve been twittering episodes of Kannagi that seem to bear that sort of spastic screaming.  I thought, instead of spamming Twitter, I would, instead, just make random comments into an update field here.

3:44 — Tsugumi discovers the wonders of porn.  Ah, porn.

4:36 — suspicious Tsugumi is suspicious.  Best facial expression today.

5:00 — Shit, it’s a cat.  Kill it, kill it!  It’s the devil’s work!!

5:21 — Tsugumi, do all your shipping speculation on your blog, like everyone else.

6:21 — HUH

6:33 — TEST YOUR MIGHT!  Duh duh d-d-d-d-duh du duh.  TEST YOUR MIGHT!  MORTAL KOMBAT!!

7:00 — hot gay boy is hot, and wants Daitetsu like a drink of water.

9:19 — Fuck Zange, and not in the good way.  Get back to the hilarious misunderstandings.  I DEMAND IT!

9:24 — with makeouts!  PUBLIC makeouts!

10:50 — Awwww.  Cuddles!

11:18 — O_o  Just…  O_o

12:41 — And in this moment, Tsugumi becomes a woman.

14:00 — “futsuu” …  Itai…

14:13 — Ninja nun!

14:43 — Retreat!  Puyo cosplay, activate!

15:48 — Shoryuken!

17:07 — Glare-y Zange is glare-y.  Awesome.

19:07 — Teh evil face!  Fear it!

19:44 — Just run, damn you!  Run!

20:14 — Sigh.  Awesome confession pre-empted by bossy goddess.  Oh well.  I guess that’s the point of the show.  Now, who’s going to flirt with Daitetsu-kun?

20:32 — School’s conclusion:  Jin is everyone-sexual.  Minna-sexual?

21:17 — I told you to run, ass.

21:53 — Akiba would keep me from calling this the fujoshi trio…  But I think it still works.

And that’s that.  Fun times, perhaps.  Look forward to a post about Bleach by day’s end.  Happy Christmas Eve, if that’s your thing!

Do I look like I have something better to do with my time?

Because no one demanded it:

(4:10:04 AM) Pontifus: your epic beard is now the mascot of super fanicom
(4:10:13 AM) cuchlann: Aroo?
(4:10:43 AM) cuchlann: It’s been trimmed down since then, anyway.
(4:10:51 AM) cuchlann: Did you just make that decision, by the way?
(4:11:05 AM) Pontifus: yeah, like fifteen seconds ago
(4:11:28 AM) cuchlann: That’s pretty quick snap-decisions there. I suppose I’m proud to have our mascot, uh, clinging to my face.
(4:12:09 AM) Pontifus: well, i tend to go with my instincts
(4:12:24 AM) Pontifus: which tell me that we need a mascot, and that aforementioned mascot should be your facial hair

Another apologetic post

Blah.  I am just about finished with my semester.  I’m working on a paper on the Gothic in survival horror video games, which I mean to use as my sample on my Ph.D applications.  I have a few online quizzes in my History of the English Language class.  I also need to do the other stuff for those applications, like get GRE test results, send in CVs and that sample, so on, blah.  Oh, and grading.

Sadly, all this means I’m less busy than I used to be.  Once I get out of the crushing despair that is doing my applications, I think I’ll have more time to watch anime again.  I’m caught up with Toradora!, but that’s it.

So, sometime soon (within a week, I hope), I mean to try to write some more for you good people.  So I thought I would tweak something that didn’t pan out several months ago — a watching challenge.

Here’s the deal:  I never know what to watch.  So you should comment here and suggest one show from this previous season that you think I should watch.  The winning suggestion gets you this stunning prize:  I will watch three episodes, blogging each one.  So, really, you’re not just recommending something for me to watch, you’re recommending something you want to see me write about.  You should tell me why you think I should watch the (single, one, solitary) show you suggest.

Right, Pontifus reminded me of something.  Don’t suggest shows I’m already watching, or things I already mean to watch.  And yes, I know, you probably don’t keep a carefully-collated list of the shit I’m doing.  Basically, I’m already watching Toradora!, I mean to watch Kannagi, and if you manage to find something else, I’ll let you know and you can have another go at it.

Oh, right:  yay Minorin dere-dere conversation (if you’re curious, I had to look up “tsundere.”  I forgot it.  I’m, uh, yeah.  End of semester.
